Hemostatic dressings are currently a fundamental component of every combat medical kit. Their effectiveness has been proven in countless operations around the world, in all weather and temperature conditions.

QuikClot® dressings are the first and, so far, most advanced hemostatic product on the market. Their current, third generation, unlike all other products of this type, is impregnated with an inert inorganic mineral called KAOLIN. This preparation works on the principle of activating plasma factors (XII and XI) in the presence of kallikrein and high molecular weight kininogen. The chain stimulation process of factor FXI completes the formation of a fibrin clot.

Kaolin-based hemostatic dressings have been repeatedly tested in laboratory and combat conditions. The US Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) and the Naval Medical Research Center conducted independent animal studies in which the effectiveness of various hemostatic dressings on femoral artery lacerations was investigated. The effects of QuikClot gauze with kaolin, QuikClot placebo gauze (without kaolin), HemCon gauze, Celox-D, and TraumaStat were compared. QuikClot gauze, containing kaolin, proved to be the most effective of all the dressings tested by the USAISR. The use of this gauze allowed for the cessation of the largest number of bleeds and the highest survival rate among the animals studied.

The Tactical Combat Casualty Care Committee (TC3) has designated QuikClot gauze as the first-line product for life-threatening external bleeding that cannot be controlled with a tourniquet. The modification of the TC3 protocol was based on the results of USAISR studies.
